If you are new to trail running, don’t be intimidated by the sport or what others tell you. Trail running is the best form of running (ask any trail runner) there is. Here are some points every trail runner (new or experienced) should remember.
- Walking is OK. Everyone is going in the same direction right? It’s about getting from A-B as quick and efficiently as possible!
- Always plan. Check your route, take enough water and food and tell people where you are going.
- Enjoy the views. Take the time to stop and enjoy the views. Otherwise you might as well be road running.
- Speed kills. You aren’t racing the other guy on the trail. Don’t worry about how you measure up to others. Work on how you measure up to how you did last week or last month.
- Pay attention. This means trail markings, weather conditions, injuries… stop playing the blame game if something goes wrong, pay attention!
- Join a pack. Look to join a trail running group, make new friends and enjoy the trail running culture! There is nothing like it!
- Prepare to bleed. Sooner or later you will take a fall, guaranteed!
- Respect the rolled ankle. Give that rolled ankle more time to heal, if you don’t you will probably pick up some other injury because your ankle is working harder than it should!
- Be helpful. Always help a fellow runner (or hiker, or mountain biker). Remember one day you just might need their help!
- Leave no trace. This simply means, DON’T LITTER.
- Test it. Don’t try something new in a race – nutrition, shoes, socks, shirts, shorts, cap, shades, hydration packs should all be tested first! Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
- Train right. Hill repeats, speed sessions, and core training. These are all essential parts of running. Remember to train right and train smart!
Trail running is all about you and having FUN – remember why you are doing it, be respectful and appreciate the fact that you are out on the trails! Being able to run is a privilege not a right!
