Almost 700 trail runners braved a chilly morning this Sunday to take on the third race of the Spur Cape Summer Trail Series™ at the scenic Lebanon Forest in the Elgin Valley. It was a picture perfect morning and the early wake-up call was well worth it as the race stood up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful and most enjoyable ones of the Spur Cape Summer Trail Series™.
It might have been a cold start but things started heating up as soon as the races took off. Bernard Rukadza continued his epic form in the 13.4km long course Championship and made it three out of three to claim victory in 53:43. In the ladies race, mountain biking legend, Hanlie Booyens took advantage of a mistake by the leading ladies to claim her first win of the Series in a time of 1:14:44.
The 6.5km short course Challenge route made for exciting racing with many of the top contenders having to battle it out in a sprint finish across the line. Llewelyn Jacobs narrowly beat Jarryd Dunn in a time of 23:22 while Mariella Dierks managed to pull away from her closest competitors in the final stages to claim first place in 28:41 – only 10 seconds ahead of second and third place.
Both Dierks and Jacobs have secured the Challenge title and Rukadza has wrapped another Championship but this will not influence the quality of racing and you can be sure the competition will be just as fierce at race 4 on 22 February as it has been for the rest of the Series.
A big thank you to our sponsors Spur Steak Ranches, adidas, Protea Hotels and Graham Beck Wines for their loyal support. See you at race 4!
