Race Report – Cradle Mayhem 2013

5327

We were now into a slightly more sheltered section dodging a few branches that were overhanging and then got spat out again next to the road back the way we came towards Maropeng and impending glory (well for a few anyway).  We entered the property again and went up a small embankment.  With quads complaining loudly we got onto the main road inside Maropeng and headed back towards the finish area via the same route we used during the previous stage.  Difference being that now the route was awash with runners from all the different distances slogging out the last few kilometers to get to the finish.  It was actually fun and motivating passing them and picking people up ahead to catch up with.  As I was trying to get in under 2 hours I had to give the last hill some stick, sprinting down the last hill and high fiving Gavin as I crossed the line. Cradle Mayhem 2013 done and dusted!

I then hung around with the other finishers and my trail buddies from Trail Inspired Adventures, swapping war stories while waiting for prize giving to start.  With the formalities done we headed up to our dorms and reluctantly packed up.  Back to reality, Monday and a full 5 day working week we went.

I’d like to thank Gavin from Mayhem Events/Multisport Basement and Debbie from Wildtrail for having me at the event, it can only grow from strength to strength.  It serves as a great introduction to stage racing in the Gauteng trail running scene.  Who knows, perhaps we may even see a second tougher event in future.
