Gorgeous, hot conditions greeted more than 130 runners as the Spur KZN Trail Series® kicked off at Inanda Dam this past Sunday. Both courses experienced some magnificent flowing single track along the banks of the Inanda Dam with nature and views making the searing heat all worthwhile.

In the men’s 8.9km long course Championship race, it was a bare-footed local Inanda Dam runner who proved local knowledge is king. Mbhasobhle Gumede blitzed his way to first place in a time of 34:01 while Zee Mkhize showed her prowess for the trails by claiming the overall ladies prize in a time of 44:14.

Youngsters show promise
The 4.5km short course Challenge race highlighted the great future potential in the KZN trail running community as six out of the top ten were under the age of 17 years old, with the times posted simply outrageous.

In the men’s race, Savages running club member, Sakhiwo Manguzela took top honours as he whipped his way around the course in a time of 15:42. Silindilo Buhle was the first lady across the line in a super time of 20:19 to register ninth place overall.

It was an electric start to what promises to be a fantastic Series and we can’t wait to make our way to Giba Gorge this Wednesday for the second race in the Series and the first night race!

Thanks to our amazing sponsors who make this all possible, Spur Steak Ranches, BOS Ice Tea, Protea Hotels and Graham Beck.
